OCCUPATION: Engine Operator Class I, II, III (m/f) (Maquinista prático de 1ª, 2ª e 3ª classes)

Depending on his/her category and the type of vessel, an engine operator can occupy the position of chief engineer (Chefe de Máquinas), second engineer (Segundo de Máquinas), or engineer officer (Chefe de Quarto de Máquinas), on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines. APPLICABLE NATIONAL LEGISLATION
Decree-Law no. 280/01 of 23rd October, as amended by Decree-Law no. 206/2005 of 28th November.

APPLICABLE COMMUNITY LEGISLATION
This occupation is recognised under EU Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications.

NOTES
A-The category of class I engine operator is open to: Class II engine operators who comply with all of the following requirements: a) completed one and a half years sea service on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 250 kW or more; b) passed a class I engine operator aptitude test).

B-The category of class II engine operator is open to: 1) Class III engine operators, ship¿s mechanics (Mecânico de bordo) and firemen promoted from engine room rating (Marinheiro-maquinista), who comply with all of the following requirements: a) one and a half years sea service, in the case of class III engine operators and firemen, and two and a half years sea service in the case of ship¿s mechanics, on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 350 kW or more; b) Successful completion of a class II machine operator career advancement course.

2) Class III machine operators who comply with all of the following requirements: a) successful completion of a maritime training course for engine operators providing a qualification equivalent to upper secondary education; b) six months sea service on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 350 kW or more; c) successful completion of a class II engine operator career advancement course.

3) Ship¿s mechanics (Mecânico de bordo) who comply with all of the following requirements: a) successful completion of a ship¿s mechanic course providing a qualification equivalent to upper secondary education; b) one year sea service on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 350 kW or more; c) successful completion of a class II machine operator career advancement course.

C- The category of class III engine operator is open to: assistant engine operators (Ajudante de maquinista), ship¿s mechanics (Mecânico de bordo) and engine room ratings (Marinheiro-maquinista) who, having achieved these categories, have completed one year sea service on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 350 kW or more.

D- The position of class III machine operator may be held by: a) registered seafarers who are duly certified to operate engines with a power output of 350 kW or less or by assistant engine operators (Ajudante de maquinista); b) the provisions of the preceding paragraph extend to registered seafarer who are certified pursuant to the previous legislation; c) Assistant engine operators (Ajudante de maquinista), ship¿s mechanics (Mecânico de bordo) and engine room ratings (Marinheiro-maquinista), who have completed one year sea service on vessels propelled by internal combustion engines with a power output of 350 kW or more.
The body responsible for issuing the Seaman¿s Book is the Harbour Master¿s Office.
